Apple is set to launch a new iphone model on February 19, which is said to be the successor to the iPhone SE series. However, it seems that this device will not be called the iPhone SE 4 as previously rumored.

Last week, CEO Tim Cook hinted at the arrival of a “new family member” on the X platform. The phrasing sparked speculation that Apple would adopt a different naming strategy for this iPhone model.

While Tim Cook didn’t specify which products would be introduced at the event, the iPhone SE 4 is the only device that makes sense to launch in mid-February. iPhone sales in the last quarter of 2024 have been falling, especially in the Chinese market.

Here, Apple is facing many difficulties due to domestic competitors. An iPhone model priced at around $ 500 with the design of the iPhone 14 but performance close to the iPhone 16 will be an attractive choice for many users.

As for the name, BGR believes that there may not be an iPhone SE 4 in Apple’s product catalog after February 19. If it followed the previous naming convention, the corporation would call it “iPhone SE (4th generation)”, but it seems that the company wants to avoid using this name for strategic reasons.

Some rumors from a few weeks ago by Majin Bu suggested that this model will be called the iPhone 16E. This name more accurately reflects the nature of the device, which is a cheap iPhone but has superior performance compared to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15.

According to current leaks, the iPhone SE 4 will feature hardware on par with the iPhone 16, with an A18 chip and 8GB of RAM to ensure the ability to run Apple Intelligence features.

However, to keep the price at $500 , the company had to cut some factors such as using a screen with a “rabbit ear” notch design instead of Dynamic Island, having only one rear camera and using a 5G modem developed by Apple itself.

This makes the iPhone SE 4 a much more compelling device than previous SE models. Previously, the iPhone SE line always had hardware that was as powerful as the flagships of the same year, such as the iPhone SE 3, which had the same performance as the iPhone 13/13 mini.

Some previous iPhone SE models have also sold quite well. However, the “iPhone SE” brand is associated with the image of an iPhone with thick bezels and a Touch ID home button. This could affect sales of the new version if Apple keeps the name.

Bloomberg ‘s Mark Gurman also suggested that Tim Cook calling the product a “new member of the family” could be a sign that the company will position it as a new iPhone line rather than just an upgrade to the iPhone SE. Gurman concluded that with major changes in design and performance, Apple’s choice of a new name makes perfect sense.

According to BGR, Apple may stop selling the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus this week. When the iPhone SE 4 was launched for $ 500 , there was almost no reason for users to choose to buy the iPhone 14 for $ 599. Especially when the iPhone 14 series does not support Apple Intelligence features. Not to mention, the iPhone 14 is no longer sold in Europe because it uses a Lightning port instead of USB-C as required by the EU.
